I’ve had the Salomon Quest 4D GTX boots for about a year now. I’ve used these, exclusively, for all of my trips, both day-hikes and multi-day backpacking trips. I wore them on my trip to Dolly Sods, where they froze overnight in -20 F. I even wore them on my very first international trek on the Salkantay Trail to Machu Picchu.

The boots now show signs of wear, after only one year. I suppose if they didn’t, I would question the intensity of my treks. Nevertheless, they have served me well and they will remain an essential part of my gear until they wear out.

Pros

  • Ankle support. I was weary after coming off of an ankle injury, and these boots gave me confidence to mount any trail I came across.
  • Blister-free, whether or not I double-up on socks.

Cons

  • If there’s a boot that leaves your feet feeling fresh after 10 hours of hiking on hard ground, this certainly isn’t it. My feet were absolutely killing me by the end of some of my longer hikes.
  • Questionable construction. I did not expect an expensive hiking boot to come apart within the first few months of trekking. Even if it isn’t the most expensive boot out there, I expect $230 to get me farther than a few hundred miles and a handful of months.
