Location: Piedmont, VA

Even though this hike is secluded and less popular than Old Rag and White Oak Canyon, parking space is small.  There is space for maybe 7 cars, and although I’ve never had a problem parking, some choose to park on the side of the road leading up to the trail (I wouldn’t personally do this because the road is narrow).  Coordinates to the parking lot are below.

Note: the road is not paved/maintained as well as others.  Be prepared for a bumpy ride, and do your car a favor and pay attention to changes in terrain, potholes, and rocks in the road.

Duration: 3:14 hours

Highlights: hiking inside streams, the sound of water flowing on rocks was constant until we passed the spring, seclusion

Gear: Garmin Fenix 3 HR Sapphire, Salomon GTX hiking boots, daypack with a gallon of water and snacks.  Check out the rest of my gear here

Lessons Learned: when hiking near water, watch out for creepy crawlers!

Hike Summary and Thoughts

Little Devils Stairs is a hidden gem that quickly became one of my favorite day hikes in Virginia.  It combines some of the best elements of two extremely popular hikes – Old Rag and White Oak Canyon – while maintaining a somewhat conspicuous anonymity.  Nevertheless, it is for anyone who wants to hike in scenery and seclusion while challenging the body on the strenuous climbs.  I really enjoy hiking Little Devils Stairs and look forward to returning to enjoy all that is has to offer.

The elevation gain is enough to make you feel accomplished before the end.  Although it is not quite as strenuous as Old Rag, it has just enough climbing to make you nostalgic.  The hike certainly takes its toll though – be prepared to sleep in and enjoy a lazy day the day after doing this hike, because you will need the rest!

This hike is not nearly as popular as Old Rag, but it allows you to experience some of what Old Rag has to offer – the rocks, not the views.  This is an important distinction because you are rewarded with absolutely no views at the end of this hike, but that’s because the view is the hike itself.

The sounds of water crashing against and flowing atop rocks are loud enough to clear your mind, and the jungle foliage provides a sense of comfort as it envelopes you.  You are forced to devote mental real estate to Nature’s glory.  It is surprisingly calming.  It is unusually welcome.  There are many water crossings, and you are constantly walking inside and on top of flowing water.  Proper footwear is essential, so be sure to watch your step!

What You Need to Know About Little Devils Stairs: The Salient Points for This Hike

  • The trail will be wet.  If you opt not to take the fire trail back to the parking lot to make the hike an out-and-back, make sure you proper footwear on the way back down.  Slipping is expected.
  • The hike is nestled away but is close to lots of other Shenandoah hikes.  If you are in the area, definitely check this trail out.
  • There is no scenic view at the end.  If views are your fuel, skip the disappointment and move on.  There are plenty of nearby hikes with phenomenal views.
