Location: Cabins, WV
This is one of the more popular hikes in the area. We were unable to find parking in the main lot beside the North Fork Trail – it has room for 5 or 6 trucks and was full – but we were able to park a short walk away from the trailhead. Coordinates to the parking lot are below.
Duration: 4:19 hours
Highlights: a beautiful view from the ridge!
Gear: Garmin Fenix 3 HR Sapphire, Salomon GTX hiking boots, daypack with a gallon of water and lunch. Check out the rest of my gear here
Lessons Learned: don’t pick up stray cats, they can fend for themselves in the wild. Animal control won’t pick them up, and the kitten’s mom is most likely nearby 🙂
Stats and GPX Data:
Total climbing: 2119 ft
Total time: 04:19:20
Hike Summary and Thoughts
Hiking Chimney Top on North Fork Mountain is a departure from our typical outdoor excursions. It is not quite so hidden, and the view at the end draws in more hikers than other nearby and similar hikes. It is somehow able to blend the good that comes with hiking, while leaving behind any of the bad that typically deters would-be beginners from getting on the trail.
The elevation gain on this trail is perfect for a day hike. Even though I knew the specs of the trail, it had me weary and woozy before we even reached the top. Thankfully, the view was just the remedy I needed. This, alone, would be reason enough to make the trip, but the end view is not the only scenery this trail has to offer.
The scenery throughout the first half of the hike is spectacular, but by the time you make it to the treeline, you have forgotten about the greenery in favor of a rocky perch with a view. Some say this is the best view in all of West Virginia – I won’t comment on this, but I will say that the view is certainly up there, both literally and figuratively! I really enjoyed hiking The North Fork Trail up to Chimney Top, and look forward to returning at some point.
What You Need to Know About The North Fork Trail: The Salient Points for This Hike
- There is cell phone service up to the trailhead. You don’t need to venture far from town to enjoy this hike. In fact, you don’t need to pack much, as there are interesting restaurants in town.
- Cell phones work above treeline, and at certain points during the hike. No need to worry about being “too unplugged” as help won’t be too far away if you need it.
- Luscious greenery throughout the first half of the hike. The beginning of the hike feels like you are stepping into the Shire.
- A Splendid view awaits at the end of the hike. This allows for a very enjoyable, almost surreal, lunch experience. Make sure you bring a real meal so that you can enjoy the full sensory experience. Think “dinner and a movie” transformed into “lunch and a view!”
