Follow-up to my previous article/video, I’ve had the Salomon Quest 4D GTX boots for about 3 years now. I’ve used these, pretty much exclusively, for day-hikes and multi-day backpacking trips. I wore them on my trip to Dolly Sods, where they froze overnight in -20 F. I even wore them on my very first international trek on the Salkantay Trail to Machu Picchu.
Well, after 2 additional years, the boots have been leaving my feet in pain after even day hikes. This might be par for the course – 3 years can do that to a pair of boots that haven’t had any parts replaced. Still, as I get older I cannot afford to leave my feet in pain; from foot pain comes back pain and all sorts of other physical and mental ailments.
It is time for a change, and that change is my new pair of Georgia Boots GB00235! Note, these are not hiking/backpacking boots. These are logger boots that just happen to fit my needs, at half the cost of the Salmon boots. Plus, they are made in the USA.
Pros
- Foot support. This boot has layers of thick outsole, midsole, and insole to keep my feet pain-free after long hikes.
- Traction.
- Waterproof.
Cons
- Less ankle support than the Salomon boots. Since these are only available in standard width, that I cannot lace them as tightly as I’d like. They also do not have the ankle-lock lacing hook that the Salomons (and many other backpacking boots) have.
